Magical Thinking versus Believing in Magic

Magical Thinking2What is the difference between magical thinking and believing in magic?  Let me begin this by making it really clear what I mean when I say “magic”. I’m not talking about pulling rabbits out of hats or Harry Potter. I want to talk about the energy of magic and the 2 ways I notice people embrace it. One of these mindsets can be beneficial and the other is disempowering… so let me explain:

Believing in magic resonates with the vibration of expansion and possibility. When we can embrace possibility, all kinds of manifesting magic starts to happen.

We get into a state of wonderment and faith. We try things out, follow our intuition and meet life with curiosity. We notice synchronicities, we have our eyes open to beauty and we’re able to delight in these things when we find them.

I’m a big advocate of believing in magic… because it brings fun, whimsy and open-heartedness to our experiences. You hold the door open for good things to happen… and very often good things walk right on in.

But there’s a big difference between believing in magic and magical thinking.

Here are a few phrases that illustrate magical thinking:

“It was meant to be. The Universe will save me. The Universe will make things happen. If it’s meant to be, the Universe will deliver it. The Universe must have had different plans for me…” You get the gist.

Now I realize that there are a lot of romantic, faith-promoting themes found in this mindset, and it’s often part of the soul purpose journey to start seeking the signs, looking for the synchronicities and having faith that the Universe, God, the Divine (however you like to think of it) has your back. The Universe does have your back, but it’s a co-creative force that works with you… it doesn’t grant wishes like a fairy godmother and it’s not the boss of you.. it responds to your will.

Magical Thinking can be quite disempowering mainly because we end up waiting. (cue Disney’s Snow White singing: “One day my prince will come… “.)

We don’t set intentions, we don’t take the actions we need to take, and we often miss opportunities.

We also don’t give ourselves credit for the amazing things we do create. I’ve watched people work their butts off to meet an amazing goal only to say when it all came together…”(sigh) it was just meant to be.”

We can miss the real magic that’s happening because we’re distracted by trying to figure out what that random meeting with a person we knew in college was all about. (Sometimes it really is just a random meeting- maybe the real gift was that it was a nice surprise) We misinterpret the impulses of our intuition and end up undermining our security or creating a lot of drama with an ungrounded leap of blindfaith because we expected the Universe to catch us.

You are the creator of your experiences and believing in magic helps you get into a dance with the Universe and collaborate. Magical Thinking often leads to abdicating responsibility and hoping that some magical force of good will come in and rescue you.

As an empowered creative soul, embrace the magic… but remember that the Universe responds to your will and you’re in the driver’s seat of your life. You can go anywhere you choose, but you have to take the wheel.

Get Acquainted with Your Higher Self

Higher Self Newsletter HeaderEveryone has intuition and a lot of us are even gifted in this department, but because of various blocks, belief systems, or lack of encouragement… it is possible to shut down that connection.  It’s never really gone, but we can feel like it is.

When our intuition is “offline”  the symptoms are a lack of self-trust, fear, and ungroundedness.  It can be extremely disempowering.  Often we feel like something is wrong with us because we’re struggling with energetic sensitivity, poor boundaries, spinning our wheels, and intense vulnerability.  It’s a worthwhile endeavor to reconstitute this inner connection because it is the source of the good stuff we’re often missing in our lives.

When I first began my journey to reconnect with my intuition, I was suffering in a lot of ways, and I knew deep down that learning to trust myself was imperative.  I began studying anything I could get my hands on about intuition, and frankly it was a bit overwhelming.

The first thing I wanted to know was:  when I use my intuition what am I connecting with?  It was important to me that I understand what kind of information to ask for and what kind of guidance I was getting.  I wanted to know that I was connecting with the LIGHT and that the guidance I was receiving was for my HIGHEST GOOD.

There are lots of sources for intuitive guidance.  You can use your intuition to connect with angels, spirit guides, nature spirits, Ascended Masters, and the Akashic Records… just to name a few.  You can also connect with your Higher Self.  All of these sources of spiritual guidance evolve out of the Divine.

However, not every source of spiritual guidance is good for every situation. For example: angels are extremely loving and can give us beautiful energetic healing and support, but with a few exceptions, most have never incarnated into the 3rd dimension.  They have no idea what it’s like to be cold or hungry or need to make a living… and often angelic guidance is very sweet, loving but not great when it comes to concrete action steps.

Our Spirit Guides  journey with us in this lifetime and most have been incarnated 3rd dimensionally but have much higher vibration rates. They are able to help with next steps and more specific guidance, but they can’t make your problems magically disappear and they won’t interfere.  If we’re not running the show, asking for assistance, and taking action, they sit quietly until we give them something to do.

Actually all spiritual helpers work this way.  They are helpers and we are in the driver seat of our lives.  If we don’t have clear intentions our guides can’t really help us get there, and if we don’t take action on the guidance we receive… they can’t make us do anything.  Ultimately, we’re in charge.

That’s why the best place to begin is connecting with your HIGHER SELF which is the command central for all of these spiritual resources and the headquarters for your soul’s journey.  This is your soul’s internal GPS system and a big ally when it comes to setting intentions and charting a course for your day, your week, or even your life.

As a soul you have a well of gifts and potential just waiting to flow through you out into the world. Your Higher Self is the voice of your inner wisdom, your conscience, and the bright ideas and beautiful visions that come to you when you least expect them.

This divine part of you has a bigger view of your life.  It knows your soul’s purpose, the life lessons it has chosen, and the gifts it has in abundance.  It knows where you are on the map of your life, it can see a lot farther down the road than you can.  It wants to steer you toward fulfillment and happiness.  More than anything, it wants you to recognize that it’s not separate from you – it is you. It’s the best you ever, and it already exists. You aren’t trying to create it or earn it or go out and find it.

You are a channel for your Higher Self and you are here to experience your divine soul gifts. When you are living authentically, giving expression to your deepest desires – creating businesses, artwork, relationships, events, etc. {whatever it is that you’re dreaming about} and expressing your soul’s gifts through these activities, you are expressing your divinity. You are in alignment with your soul, and you will feel a sense of deep satisfaction and fulfillment as you proceed {even if it’s challenging and a little scary sometimes}.

Learning to connect with your Higher Self is empowering because it puts you in touch with your inner truth and places you in the driver’s seat of your life.  It’s a first step towards creating a soul-full life and learning some tools to help you cultivate this relationship can help activate you intuition, stimulate your creativity and strengthen your boundaries.  So get acquainted with your Higher Self and bring your intuition back online for healthy boundaries, clear intentions, and powerful creating.

Tapping the Treasure of Your Intuition

The High Priestess from the Gilded Tarot

The High Priestess from the Gilded Tarot

The High Priestess has come up during these hot August days to invite you into your own cool inner sanctuary.  She’s all about being inward, and the gifts she brings are heightened intuition, new knowledge, understanding and ultimately… peace.  She wants you to learn something about yourself, and she’s asking you to be still, listen, and pay attention to the subtle magic and miracles that are sparkling all around you.

It’s a great time to talk about tools to help you trust your inner knower.  The truth is we are all blessed with a sixth sense, and it’s available anytime.  If you’re already pretty aware of this, then The High Priestess is calling you into a quiet space to connect because there’s a message in your “inbox”.  However, if this is a new concept for you… she may be inviting you to learn something that will help you cultivate and strengthen your connection.

The world we live in doesn’t really support the notion of intuition, and it definitely doesn’t encourage us to slow down and go inward.  We are very busy people struggling to balance what seems like a never-ending stream of worldly demands.  But guess what?  One of the best gifts and secrets that The High Priestess offers is this:  When you learn to work with and trust your intuition it makes everything you do in life easier.  It also makes for a more fun and interesting journey.

You may have a spiritual book of some kind calling to you or a workshop you’ve been thinking about taking.  Maybe you’ve been “trying” to start a meditation practice that hasn’t really taken off.  These are callings with pretty straightforward instructions, but what if you’re just not sure what this means for you?  She may be calling you to cultivate your intuition.  In this case I recommend using an oracle deck of cards.

Years ago my spiritual journey really evolved when I purchased a deck of angel cards and starting pulling one everyday.  Although I was very intuitive, sensitive, and empathic I had never really learned to acknowledge {let alone use} these skills.  In fact, everything I had learned for most of my life had taught me to disregard my intuition and put my faith in the external or “real” world.  This strategy was not working for me.

I was going from one drama to the next, feeling every blow very deeply.  The first instructions I received for healing involved taking care of my physical body, but as soon as I had reclaimed some of my vitality I knew that I had to eliminate the drains on my spirit. I needed to rekindle my intuition, so I could navigate better in the future.

The High Priestess called me into my inner sanctuary for a major drama detox and spirit cleanse, and my angel cards became the tools I used to get acquainted with my intuition.  These cards helped me learn the language of my spirit so I could communicate with it more easily.  Later I added more cards {including the Tarot} to my collection and my “vocabulary” grew because my conscious mind learned to interpret the symbols and information coming from my unconscious.

All of our spirits are fluent in symbolism ~ that’s the language your intuition speaks.  It may come up for you as random words, images, sounds, colors, memories, feelings, or sensations in your body.  It’s unique for each person, but it is there if you start looking for it.  Finding a way to discern what these symbols mean for you is what is important.  Once you agree on a system with your spirit it will work with you.

I knew nothing about tarot cards when I first began and had a lot of apprehension about them because of scary movies with scenes of gypsies making ominous predictions.  The first thing I learned about the cards was this:  A tarot card or oracle card is a piece of paper with pictures and numbers printed on it… nothing more.  It doesn’t have special powers.  The cards can’t do anything to you.  They simply use archetypal symbolism to help you learn about yourself and your relationship with the world around you.  You have the power, not a paper card.

If this resonates for you, all you have to do is choose a deck you love and draw a card everyday for guidance.   Just use the images to give you messages from your spirit for your highest and best good.  Keeping a journal is a great thing to do too because you can choose your card and then write down all the meanings it has for you.  Over time this practice can go from a learning exercise to a full blown conversation with your highest self and life truly does become magical.  When we let our inner wisdom guide us, we’re always on the best path, so check in and see where The High Priestess is guiding you.  There is amazing treasure waiting to be discovered within.  xo

What Does Your Inner Child Need?

The Six of Cups from The Wildwood Tarot and The Gateway to the Divine Tarot

The Six of Cups from The Wildwood Tarot and The Gateway to the Divine Tarot

Are you feeling overwhelmed these days?  Maybe you’re keeping track of baseball schedules, music lessons, your job, meals, volunteer work, etc… and then there are the errands.  You’ve got emails to return, permission slips to sign, and every time you see one of your family members they remind you of something they need you to do.  There aren’t enough hours in the day to get it all done and everything feels too important to let go.  You drop into bed exhausted and have trouble falling asleep because now your head is filled with the bills you need to pay and the little things you forgot to do…. you’re exhausted and finally fall asleep (or not) knowing that you’ll get up tomorrow and do it all again.  It’s exhausting just writing about it, much more, living it.

If this, or some version of it closely resembles your life on a consistent basis, then The Six of Cups is really speaking to you and here’s the message:  You need to hit the “reset button” by giving your Inner Adult a break and entertaining your Inner Child.  Of course, your Inner Adult may be reading this and saying, “Absolutely impossible,” but that’s what our Inner Adults do – especially when they are in high gear.   The Six of Cups reminds us that a healthy person needs to maintain a balance between both Inner Child and Inner Adult.  Our Inner Adults help us stay grounded, make good decisions, and work towards goals.  Our Inner Children keep us inspired, playful, and content.  We can be irresponsible, ungrounded and chaotic if our Inner Children are constantly in charge, and our lives can get equally messy, colorless, and uninspiring when our Inner Adults are running the show.  It’s like the Von Trapp children from “The Sound of Music” – if your life feels a little bit like those marching kids in their uniforms answering to the Captain’s whistle, then you need a little music, creativity and fun to reunite you with your heart – home to your absolutely adorable and loveable Inner Child.  You need your version of Fraulein Maria to come in and spice things up a bit…. and if you’re not familiar with these “Sound of Music” references you might start by watching this classic movie (singing about your “Favorite Things” is guaranteed to make you feel sillier, freer, and a lot better : )

This is really the message of The Six of Cups…. to reconnect with your heart and transform your Inner Adult from a cold task master back into a loving parent.  The first step is doing something that feels good to your starved Inner Child.  This might mean that you need to take a break and completely change the channel for a few hours or it might mean that you need to approach what you’re already doing with fresh eyes and a lighter step.  For example, this weekend my Adult felt that we needed to clean out the barn/garage.  It was overdue and had grown into a huge task.  As we began the process my partner, Joel, was anxious.  He knows that when I go into “high gear” things can get pretty tense, but I had already been reminded during the week that I needed to slow down, pace myself and find the fun in the process.  Keeping this in mind…when I found the old hula hoop I took a few minutes to try it out.  I let my creative spirit enjoy the treasure hunt aspect of going through old things that I had forgotten about.  We talked about ideas for our yard as we worked side by side and played music the whole time.  We stopped at regular intervals, got drinks of water, admired our handy work and had snacks.  We let our Inner Adults take good care of us while we worked, and we let our Inner Children have some fun.  All in all, we got through the whole process without bickering and the task was complete by the end of the weekend.  Suddenly a huge weight was lifted.

I’ve tackled jobs like this many times over the years and they haven’t gone anything like this, so I’m not trying to paint a picture of perfection here… we were grateful and surprised by the experience!  What I do want to point out is that sometimes our Adults go overboard.  We become so fixated on goals and checking things off our lists that our Children get stifled and starved.  We forget to take care of ourselves, we push ourselves to exhaustion and every action is something we are rushing through to get to the next “have to” on our list.  When our Inner Adult has declared martial law in our lives and our Inner Child is neglected or exhausted… we may not know why, but we feel awful.  It can show up as stress, anxiety, or even a numb, listless feeling, and it’s a clue that something is off.  This is where your spirit comes in and suggests that you take a little time to reset, do something relaxing, fun, or simply do nothing for a little while – daydream.  Don’t be surprised if you meet up with some resistance from your militant Adult and your whiny Child at first.  Just do something different and break the cycle.  If you can play along with your spirit for a little while you’ll see that your wound up Adult transforms into a good parent and your irritable, bratty child becomes a happy, well-tended cherub.  Take a deep breath, center your awareness in your heart and quietly ask your spirit what will bring “music” back into your world right now.  Pay attention to the first thing that pops into your head.  This is intuitive guidance!  Give your Inner Adult a break and hit the “reset button” in your life.  When you allow for the pause, you allow bright ideas, clarity and magic to enter your life. xo

Just Do It! Follow Your Inner Guidance

Two of Wands from the Goddess Tarot

Two of Wands from the Goddess Tarot

The fiery Two of Wands has shown up today with encouragement and guidance to take action and do your part in the co-creation of your life.  The two’s are about relationships, separate energies coming together, engaging in a creative process, and harmonizing.  When we are participating, taking helpful action, and showing up full-out in our relationships with other people these relationships flourish and thrive.  The Two of Wands addresses our relationship with spirit and invites us to engage in a dance with the Creator, so that we can heal, have fun, and change our lives in positive ways.

The Wands symbolize the element of fire, and there is always movement when fire shows up.  It’s the propelling force or the divine spark of inspiration.  Many of us have begun new projects, are seeing things in new ways and have a lot of enthusiasm for the path we’re on.  Some of us feel like we’ve suddenly been rerouted and we’re not at all familiar with this road less traveled.  The Two of Wands is asking us to take action – to move, but it’s not directing us to just do for the sake of doing.  It’s asking us to listen to the inner knowing of our hearts and move in that direction.  It’s also asking that we be willing to take small steps with faith because it may not be possible for us to know the benefit of an action until we have experienced it.  Often, when I do readings I find that the guidance is so simple and immediate that the brain wants to dismiss it.  I can feel the intellect start up and the inner resistance that says, “well, that’s too easy” or “How is that going to fix my problem?”  Creating change in our lives requires moving in a new direction and the only way to do this is by taking simple steps that are different from the ones we’ve been taking.  It starts small and The Two of Wands is indicating that your spirit is calling to you.  It’s directing you to a path.  Are you taking the action that it’s indicating?  That’s the question this card brings up and it invites us into a dance with the Creator, so that we can co-create the beautiful life experiences we want to have.  Here’s how it works:

1.  The first step is showing up and asking for guidance.  Speak to your heart and ask your higher self to guide you.  Ask for loving, light-filled guidance for your highest good.  At this point the Creator steps in to meet you and the dance begins.

2.  The second step is listening and being open to that guidance when it comes.  It is subtle and it will often surprise you – it feels good but may not be what you expected.  The more open you can become, the more clear this guidance will be for you.  Learning to find inner quiet is beneficial, but know that it’s possible to do this even if you are not practicing formal meditation.  Sometimes a quiet walk outside can calm the mind enough for guidance to come through.  I used to find some of the best creative ideas and solutions would drop in for me when I was taking short country drives in a quiet car.  If you don’t feel like you’re getting guidance or you question what you are getting, it doesn’t mean that the guidance isn’t there – it just indicates that you’re “in your head”.  You may find that your guidance starts to come to you through other messengers and is repetitious.  If you’ve heard over and over again that you need to relax more and give yourself a breather it’s not just a bunch of tiresome people giving you a hard time – it may be your higher self trying to get through to you!  Check in with your heart and see if that message feels like a welcome relief and keep your eyes and ears open to other messages that may be  showing up in this way.

3.  This is where step three comes in:  Just do it!  Act on the guidance that you are receiving.  If you are being guided to rest, then rest.  If you’re being guided to send an email or make a phone call, do it.  As I talked about with The Wheel of Fortune this is the year for breaking old cycles that don’t serve us – we want to get off the outer rim of the wheel and find our power in the center.  Taking action when our guidance kicks in is crucial.  This is where the rubber meets the road and change takes place.  The Two of Wands is encouraging us to keep going.  Even if we haven’t seen the full results of our efforts we don’t need to give up before the miracle occurs.  Put one foot in front of the other and take the actions that spirit is guiding you to take.  You are learning by doing. xo
