What is Procrastination Telling You?

IMG_5271

What is procrastination telling you when it comes to those heart felt creative projects that you just can’t seem to get underway?

Often, creative folks have about a million ideas, projects and possibilities they’re holding onto. These may exist in the form of some unfinished project or they’re floating around in your mind and bobbing up to the surface every now and then.

You know you’re procrastinating because one of these big ideas keeps calling to you. In the beginning it was very inspiring. You probably put a lot of mental energy into the idea… there was something in you that said: Yes! I really want to do this!

But somewhere along the way, it dropped off. It never got started or it got set aside.

We all do this (and then give ourselves a hard time about it.) And eventually it starts to feel kind of heavy and gross... because you’re stuck and there’s always something else that seems to take priority over that wonderful thing you want to create.

You’re procrastinating and here’s what’s going on:

Procrastination is telling you 1 of 2 things:

1. It’s telling you that you actually DON’T want to do something. That’s a very different scenario than the one I just described, so I want to make the distinction. Sometimes you procrastinate because you said yes to something out of obligation and now your spirit is rebelling. The solution to this sort of procrastination is to cultivate awareness around the vibration of obligation and stop doing things because you feel you “should”.

OR

2. If you’ve eliminated option one, then you know that your project is a true desire. You’re wondering: Why am I resisting doing this thing that I was so inspired and excited about? The answer is: FEAR.

Underneath procrastination there is always some form of fear. It is literally a holding back, a contraction of energy, and protective mechanism that you’re hard-wired to have when you feel vulnerable. And that’s exactly what happens when you do anything new.

And it’s completely normal. Fear is the typical response we all have to the unknown. So if you’ve been dreaming about a project and failing to take action, it’s because somewhere you’re afraid. And it’s ok.

It’s telling you that whatever you’re dreaming about has the power to change you, to shift you into a new vibration and transform your life. This may be very exciting and also scary as hell. That new action is taking you into an unfamiliar experience which is exactly what your soul is reaching for.

But every step you take to make it more real also makes you realize that things are gonna change.  And this brings your protective ego mechanism into the mix… and that’s why you’re procrastinating. Your ego doesn’t like change.

The first step in overcoming that fear is recognizing what is going on and re-framing it. You probably won’t feel comfortable as you navigate this new territory, but you can keep moving forward by reminding yourself: I’m doing something I’ve never done before and feeling scared is normal. You can get past procrastination. Find your inner courage and take one little step and then another. Movement is the key. You’re not weird or lazy when you procrastinate. You’re having an absolutely NORMAL response to something new.

You’re afraid because you dared to dream up something that BIG… and now the toothpaste is out of the tube. You can’t put it back in. You’re dream is active and it needs you. So use this re-frame on procrastination and take one step. And know that you’re also BRAVE.

Celebrate every little action you take because it’s courageous. Even if you don’t leap tall buildings in a single bound… you’re still making progress. There is a lot happening under the surface that’s re-patterning your vibration into alignment with every action you take. So keep going : )

Stoke Your Creative Fire: Change the Scenery

What my creative fire produced after I changed the scenery.  Work in progress by Jennifer Currie

As an artist and intuitive, I am a bit of an inspiration junkie. I love that moment when you get the spark of an idea that opens a door to all kinds of possibility. It’s energetic fuel for your creative fire and if you take action, things start to happen.

The creative process is a journey, however, and this is just a part of that path. I feel it most strongly at the beginning of a project and can joyfully follow it to a certain point where inevitably I feel stuck. And I’ve noticed this happens both on and off the canvas.

It happens when I start a new yoga class or diet. It happens when I tackle projects for my business. It happens when I take new classes and start learning something new. There comes a point where that initial burst of creative energy starts to taper off and in order to keep moving forward I need to feed that little spark so it can become a steady-burning fire.

This is where I’ve found that the best thing to do is KEEP GOING… (and trust me, it’s not always the thing I want to do.) ACTION, even if it’s little micro steps that seem insignificant on their own are essential at this stage.

But sometimes we get really stuck and that’s when we need what I think of as a “Pattern Disrupt”. There are lots of ways to do this and get out of ruts, but the BEST way is to change the scenery.

You can change the scenery in really accessible ways by simply taking a different walk to work, going window shopping or trying out pretty much anything new and different.

Sometimes though… we need a big change and traveling to a new place has never failed to re-energize me when I’m feeling creatively droopy. Whether you go on a full-out vacation or simply on a day trip off the beaten path… the fresh and different sights, sounds, tastes and energy of a new place can snap you right out of your creative doldrums and stoke your inner creative fire.

I recently took a weekend trip to Montréal, Canada with my daughter for just this reason. It was a relatively short drive away. It was a different country, and it was a place I had never been… so it definitely qualified as a perfect opportunity to change the scenery.

We had a great and sometimes not all that comfortable adventure that included getting lost in a maze of tunnels and highways around the city center when our GPS failed, eating some amazing food (definitely a city to go for that!), and stepping out of the very chilly 20 degree spring weather into the balmy, green of the Montréal Botanical Gardens. It was a quick trip, but we got to enjoy the sounds of people speaking French, several amazing lattés, and the vibration of this warm and friendly city.

We returned home exhausted, and then… I noticed after a good night’s sleep in my own bed, there it was: my inspiration! It was back. My energy had returned and my head was full of bright ideas.

When you need to stoke your creative fire, find a way to change the scenery. It may take a few days for the effects to sink in and sometimes it’s instantaneous… but it’s a great way to rediscover your inspiration.

Magical Thinking versus Believing in Magic

Magical Thinking2What is the difference between magical thinking and believing in magic?  Let me begin this by making it really clear what I mean when I say “magic”. I’m not talking about pulling rabbits out of hats or Harry Potter. I want to talk about the energy of magic and the 2 ways I notice people embrace it. One of these mindsets can be beneficial and the other is disempowering… so let me explain:

Believing in magic resonates with the vibration of expansion and possibility. When we can embrace possibility, all kinds of manifesting magic starts to happen.

We get into a state of wonderment and faith. We try things out, follow our intuition and meet life with curiosity. We notice synchronicities, we have our eyes open to beauty and we’re able to delight in these things when we find them.

I’m a big advocate of believing in magic… because it brings fun, whimsy and open-heartedness to our experiences. You hold the door open for good things to happen… and very often good things walk right on in.

But there’s a big difference between believing in magic and magical thinking.

Here are a few phrases that illustrate magical thinking:

“It was meant to be. The Universe will save me. The Universe will make things happen. If it’s meant to be, the Universe will deliver it. The Universe must have had different plans for me…” You get the gist.

Now I realize that there are a lot of romantic, faith-promoting themes found in this mindset, and it’s often part of the soul purpose journey to start seeking the signs, looking for the synchronicities and having faith that the Universe, God, the Divine (however you like to think of it) has your back. The Universe does have your back, but it’s a co-creative force that works with you… it doesn’t grant wishes like a fairy godmother and it’s not the boss of you.. it responds to your will.

Magical Thinking can be quite disempowering mainly because we end up waiting. (cue Disney’s Snow White singing: “One day my prince will come… “.)

We don’t set intentions, we don’t take the actions we need to take, and we often miss opportunities.

We also don’t give ourselves credit for the amazing things we do create. I’ve watched people work their butts off to meet an amazing goal only to say when it all came together…”(sigh) it was just meant to be.”

We can miss the real magic that’s happening because we’re distracted by trying to figure out what that random meeting with a person we knew in college was all about. (Sometimes it really is just a random meeting- maybe the real gift was that it was a nice surprise) We misinterpret the impulses of our intuition and end up undermining our security or creating a lot of drama with an ungrounded leap of blindfaith because we expected the Universe to catch us.

You are the creator of your experiences and believing in magic helps you get into a dance with the Universe and collaborate. Magical Thinking often leads to abdicating responsibility and hoping that some magical force of good will come in and rescue you.

As an empowered creative soul, embrace the magic… but remember that the Universe responds to your will and you’re in the driver’s seat of your life. You can go anywhere you choose, but you have to take the wheel.

Get Acquainted with Your Higher Self

Higher Self Newsletter HeaderEveryone has intuition and a lot of us are even gifted in this department, but because of various blocks, belief systems, or lack of encouragement… it is possible to shut down that connection.  It’s never really gone, but we can feel like it is.

When our intuition is “offline”  the symptoms are a lack of self-trust, fear, and ungroundedness.  It can be extremely disempowering.  Often we feel like something is wrong with us because we’re struggling with energetic sensitivity, poor boundaries, spinning our wheels, and intense vulnerability.  It’s a worthwhile endeavor to reconstitute this inner connection because it is the source of the good stuff we’re often missing in our lives.

When I first began my journey to reconnect with my intuition, I was suffering in a lot of ways, and I knew deep down that learning to trust myself was imperative.  I began studying anything I could get my hands on about intuition, and frankly it was a bit overwhelming.

The first thing I wanted to know was:  when I use my intuition what am I connecting with?  It was important to me that I understand what kind of information to ask for and what kind of guidance I was getting.  I wanted to know that I was connecting with the LIGHT and that the guidance I was receiving was for my HIGHEST GOOD.

There are lots of sources for intuitive guidance.  You can use your intuition to connect with angels, spirit guides, nature spirits, Ascended Masters, and the Akashic Records… just to name a few.  You can also connect with your Higher Self.  All of these sources of spiritual guidance evolve out of the Divine.

However, not every source of spiritual guidance is good for every situation. For example: angels are extremely loving and can give us beautiful energetic healing and support, but with a few exceptions, most have never incarnated into the 3rd dimension.  They have no idea what it’s like to be cold or hungry or need to make a living… and often angelic guidance is very sweet, loving but not great when it comes to concrete action steps.

Our Spirit Guides  journey with us in this lifetime and most have been incarnated 3rd dimensionally but have much higher vibration rates. They are able to help with next steps and more specific guidance, but they can’t make your problems magically disappear and they won’t interfere.  If we’re not running the show, asking for assistance, and taking action, they sit quietly until we give them something to do.

Actually all spiritual helpers work this way.  They are helpers and we are in the driver seat of our lives.  If we don’t have clear intentions our guides can’t really help us get there, and if we don’t take action on the guidance we receive… they can’t make us do anything.  Ultimately, we’re in charge.

That’s why the best place to begin is connecting with your HIGHER SELF which is the command central for all of these spiritual resources and the headquarters for your soul’s journey.  This is your soul’s internal GPS system and a big ally when it comes to setting intentions and charting a course for your day, your week, or even your life.

As a soul you have a well of gifts and potential just waiting to flow through you out into the world. Your Higher Self is the voice of your inner wisdom, your conscience, and the bright ideas and beautiful visions that come to you when you least expect them.

This divine part of you has a bigger view of your life.  It knows your soul’s purpose, the life lessons it has chosen, and the gifts it has in abundance.  It knows where you are on the map of your life, it can see a lot farther down the road than you can.  It wants to steer you toward fulfillment and happiness.  More than anything, it wants you to recognize that it’s not separate from you – it is you. It’s the best you ever, and it already exists. You aren’t trying to create it or earn it or go out and find it.

You are a channel for your Higher Self and you are here to experience your divine soul gifts. When you are living authentically, giving expression to your deepest desires – creating businesses, artwork, relationships, events, etc. {whatever it is that you’re dreaming about} and expressing your soul’s gifts through these activities, you are expressing your divinity. You are in alignment with your soul, and you will feel a sense of deep satisfaction and fulfillment as you proceed {even if it’s challenging and a little scary sometimes}.

Learning to connect with your Higher Self is empowering because it puts you in touch with your inner truth and places you in the driver’s seat of your life.  It’s a first step towards creating a soul-full life and learning some tools to help you cultivate this relationship can help activate you intuition, stimulate your creativity and strengthen your boundaries.  So get acquainted with your Higher Self and bring your intuition back online for healthy boundaries, clear intentions, and powerful creating.

Three Common Blind Spots to Abundance

IMG_4893

A detail of a larger work in progress by Jennifer Currie

Creativity is linked to Abundance.  In fact, a huge part of your soul purpose is to create and manifest.  You are here to experience yourself as a gifted divine soul.  Knowing your soul gifts and putting them to use is the key to your abundance along with attracting and manifesting anything you want.

Since I was in my teens I’ve wanted to be more empowered in my creativity and to me that means empowered abundance, empowered self-expression, and also having empowered boundaries so I could feel good in my skin and free to make the choices that truly work best for my life.

Many of us have this desire, but it’s not something we’re necessarily encouraged or taught to do when we are children.  It’s actually much more common for most folks to be living out of alignment with their divine soul gifts, dialing down their sparkle, fitting in… and living lives so full of obligation that they feel like they have few or no choices.

The truth is, if we were living in alignment with our soul gifts, we’d be manifesting brilliantly and bringing lots of empowered and joyful experiences into our lives.

For years I read everything I could get my hands on about aligning with abundance and manifesting with ease… but there were 3 major blindspots that kept me from fully experiencing my creative power.  I’ve noticed that these 3 blindspots are pretty common and often block our ability to experience the kind of abundance we truly want.

BLINDSPOT # 1:  Not Knowing Your Soul Gifts:  In order to be empowered creatively we have to know and own our soul gifts because what we have in abundance is the key to our abundance.  It’s really hard to shine brightly and bring your special genius into the world, if you don’t know what it is.  However, it’s actually very common for us to overlook and take for granted the very talents and gifts that are our primary magic.

Also, if we don’t know or understand our gifts and personal truth within, we tend to look for it outside of ourselves.  We make other people responsible for determining our value and we do a lot of things out of obligation.  It may not be  something we do consciously but it sneaks in all over the place.  It’s a disempowered way to live and an abundance roadblock.

BLINDSPOT #2  Vague or Misaligned Intentions:  In order to create anything, we have to have a clear intention.  It’s kind of like putting the address of your destination into your GPS.  The problem here shows up in 2 ways:  Either we don’t put an address in and drive around wondering why the GPS doesn’t tell us where to go OR we put in an address to a place that isn’t where we truly want to go.

Sometimes we fail to understand how powerful we are, and we wait for the Universe to deliver an answer or show us where we need to go.  The truth is, the Universe is responsive and we have to take the first step and decide what we want.

And if we want abundance… we need to choose things that line up with our soul gifts.  Sometimes we have soul gift envy ~ where we see so clearly how someone else is talented and we admire it.  We may think…”I want to do THAT.”  We can even give it a try, but if it’s not aligned with our gifts it just won’t deliver the same fulfillment and flow.

BLINDSPOT #3:  No Action:  Empowered creativity requires action.  We are human beings living in the 3rd Dimension.  That means we have bodies, we require food, shelter and clothing.  We are subject to time and the vibration rate of this plane of existence is a lot slower than say… our mental plane.

It’s quite easy to create on the mental plane.  It’s pretty much instantaneous.   All you have to do is imagine something and poof! there it is right in your mind’s eye.  This is actually great in terms of manifesting because we can run a lot of possibilities in our minds.  We can create quick sketches and rough drafts of our manifestations… and that is important to the process.  This helps us out a lot when we’re setting intentions.

But these things will remain just that:  possibilities….. until we take some kind of action to bring them into a tangible, 3rd dimensional state.  Taking action always requires effort, but it doesn’t have to be miserable or difficult effort.  When we’re lining up our actions with our soul gifts our efforts can be extremely fulfilling, enjoyable and they lead to prosperity.

Whatever you’re trying to create and manifest whether it’s more money in your bank account, more time, a relationship, or more artistic expression… your soul gifts are the key to your abundance.  Check in with yourself and ask:  do I know what my gifts are?  Am I setting soul-aligned intentions? What actions do I need to take?

Here’s to your beautiful, empowered creativity!
